Drawdio

Drawing Sound – Exploring audio through playful circuits.

What is Drawdio?

Drawdio is a DIY circuit that turns drawings into sound. Originally invented by Jay Silver, the circuit was revisited and adapted by Otherthings in collaboration with Manecolabs for educational use. Our version emphasizes experimentation and interaction, inviting children to understand sound and electronics by drawing, touching, and listening.

Pedagogical Use & Workshops

Since 2023, Drawdio has played a central role in Otherthings’ educational approach, especially through a series of workshops designed for children. These sessions have taken place in diverse contexts such as miniBOOTH at FEZ Berlin and ZÖNOTÉKA Project Space, combining creative drawing with circuit-based sound experimentation.

In each workshop, children build their own Drawdio, a circuit connected to a pencil, and discover how sound is created through drawing and touch. They explore how graphite, the human body, and conductive paths form a complete circuit—turning a simple line on paper into a dynamic sound controller.

Through playful experimentation and collective creation, the workshops introduce basic concepts of electronics such as conductivity and resistance in an intuitive, embodied way.

The sessions encourage curiosity, sensory exploration, and collaboration — allowing each participant to contribute to a shared sonic experience.
